Walking the path of righteousness
"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled" (Matthew 5:9)
God will quench the thirst of those who desire him as a man who walks in a dry desert with an empty water bottle. There is nothing casual about being thirsty and hungry where nothing seems to fulfill the desire. We allow our flesh to indulge in people, places and things trying to fulfill this overwhelming longing. Yet our God, is in the filling business and will satisfy and fill us up until we overflow. Consider, we will eat junk food but it is never filling as a well prepared meal. It leaves us desperate longing for something of substance that only God can supply. In order to experience this filling, we must yield and walk the path of a holy life that is pleasing to God. Hungry, thirsty people work hard, urgently, to gain food in a desperate attempt to fulfill the need. To hunger and thirst for righteousness, means we should urgently pursue righteousness. Jesus used as a metaphor "Hunger and Thirst" that doesn't necessarily resonate as it did in Jesus' day, when food and water were scarce and people where often hungry and thirsty. In our culture, food and water are plentiful, we can miss the urgency Jesus intended in Matthew 5:9. To hunger and thirst is to yearn for God's rule in our lives. We must have a thirst for God's Word that will satisfy any hunger that food, people, places or things could do. Our hunger and thirst for righteousness leads us to promoting God's causes in business, education, politics, and not just in the church but empowers us to evangelize about his righteousness globally. If you are thirsty and hungry today and nothing is satisfying you nor offering the fulfillment you’ve been longing for, try Jesus, you will be both filled, and therefore, blessed.
